The project should be for profit, otherwise the game will die. There are nothing wrong if you will receive money from your work. Although the game should have a few devs on regular basis who should get money for their work. Of course, if you want the game to be developed further.
TD;LR: Game should be for profit otherwise it will die like original DFO.

ALot of other private EMU servers for other games running, almost all are non-profit though. They accept donations for server costs and things like that, not sure how they world it for legal safety.

problem i see with this, that people will create multiple accounts to grind ressources, i know its cool if you have an alt but asian kids mostly have 100 accounts and do nothing else the day than to harvest. we could limit connections per ip, that would do it i guess. taking money for services, would also work but then its even harder to get new players. i'd say free service with limited connections per ip

Community has to stay tight, inspite of the raging that happens from getting killed.
This is a crazy longshot, but have you guys consider hiring a programer from a site like tasks every day? I'd donate for sure, they work pretty cheap also. You can find someone with the skills needed to help with this, and assign them things. Might help cut down on really tedious stuff?

I think the problem that everyone runs into is trust and like you said "a crazy longshot". Plus it adds another layer of pressure on the main guys right now. People will be expecting results when the whole thing might not ever get started.

The decision is ultimately up to the main guys working the hardest. If they feel they need the help, then they can reach out to the rest of us and we can probably pay for a month or two of work no problem. The server emulation will be the hardest and most tedious task, so some expertise on that would be worth the money.

Just thought I'd throw it out there, I use them for my business sometimes. It's alot cheaper then I can pay someone with the same skills for the work here in the US. It's also alot easier to just hire a temp that way, and the contract runs out, its done.
